Milan

Where beauty is hidden on purpose.

MilanMilan — detail

Milan hides its beauty on purpose, and I've come to love it for that. The city runs on a simple contract: the street gets sobriety, the courtyard gets the garden, and you only see the second if someone wants you to. Walk Corso Magenta at dusk and count the lit windows behind heavy gates — every one is a room you'll never see and can't stop imagining.

What I notice here: door handles (this city has the best in the world, and knows it); the terrazzo in old ingressi, patched over decades in slightly wrong colours that turned out right; the bar counters, always slightly too high, that make an espresso feel like a decision. And the light in Brera at 7pm, which turns every ochre wall into a lesson on why colour should come from material, not paint.

Milan is my working definition of quiet luxury: a city wealthy enough to show off, choosing not to — and being unmistakable because of it.
